Rapheal Mathis has been a spoken word artist for 10 years. After experiencing poetry in an 8th grade language arts class, Rapheal was inspired to put his thoughts on paper and express himself through spoken word. Throughout High School, Rapheal participated in Speech Team competitions (First in Conference), Poetry Out Loud (First in state; top nine in the country), and Louder Than A Bomb Spoken Word competition in Chicago. Rapheal also continued to express his passion in college by creating a club “Poets Igniting Change”. This group was committed to providing a space for students to write and perform. While at Lake Forest College Rapheal shared the stage with artists such as Harold Green, Nate Marshall and Jamila Woods to name a few. Now out of college, Rapheal has been featured in commercials for College of Lake County and RELO Direct. Using Spoken Word to convey a message, Rapheal looks to explore new platforms and share his gift with the world. Rapheal is also determined to help others discover their passions through spoken word and realize their potential.
